It’s official – the 2020 AFL Grand Final will be at The Gabba in Queensland. Who would have thought. For the footy fans amongst us, (obviously I’m one of them), it is beyond imagining that the mecca for football, the MCG will be empty and forlorn this year.
As a lifelong Western Bulldogs/Footscray supporter, one of the best days of my life was going to the Grand Final in 2016 when we won against all expectations. Just getting there was an emotional ride. My son had always promised me that if we ever made it to the Grand Final he would make sure he would take me. Fat chance said I, tickets will be like hen’s teeth, however I didn’t count on his resourcefulness. It took a lot of calls and disappointments, but a late call on the eve of the game, he managed to score two tickets in a great spot. Throw a few things into the bag and make a mad dash down the freeway – this was an opportunity I wasn’t going to miss.
The euphoria of winning after sixty two years was something that will stay with me for life.
Football is an integral part of Victoria’s psyche and the atmosphere of being within that coliseum that is the MCG is impossible to describe. The Grand Final won’t be the same at The Gabba, but at least there will be a game in a year that has been more than weird. Fingers crossed that 2021 will see a return to a normal football season.
