Award for very happy hens

While the blue egg cartons have only recently started appearing in stores around the region, the eggs produced by the very happy hens from Creswick Open Range Farm have won a Silver Medal for free range eggs at the Australian Food Awards. Not bad for a new(ish) product. Proof that hard work and dedication to a dream can pay off. You can pick up your Creswick Open Range Farm eggs at Creswick Market on 17th August.

Ballarat International Foto Biennale opens next weekend.

Adi Nes’ Soldier Series exhibition

One of Israel’s leading photographers, Adi Nes, exhibits his tenderly subversive images at Ballarat International Foto Biennale. In a style that’s evocative of classical art and religious parable, Soldiers intimately captures the intervening moments within the rigidity of military life and explores the relationship between masculinity and lost innocence. There will be so much more to see at the Biennale between 24th August and 20th October.

A hint of things to come

After snow, constant grey skies and frozen toes, it’s good to know that the happy face of spring isn’t too far away. So make sure this one is in your diary. As the warmer days and clear skies appear, more than 30,000 of Bendigo’s famed-tulips open to brighten the beautiful heritage streets from mid to late September to mid October.  The tulips are in an assortment of colours, sizes and blooming times.

Good food & coffee at Pancho’s

Pancho’s in Daylesford is a great, ambient little cafe (formerly Breakfast & Beer) that serves unassuming, very flavoursome food and great coffee, all delivered with cheerful smiles. Pancho’s is in Vincent Street, opposite the primary school. Closed Tuesday. Pancho’s are offering one of their recipes for our Town on a Plate feature in the spring issue of Secrets. Keep an eye out for it

Try the Rosti – yummo

Spring – time to plan your garden

The prospect of warmer weather encouraging more outdoor activity, it’s time to start planning out the garden. After all the prep work is finished, it’s time to select those plants that will transform the home into luscious, sweet smelling and food producing gardens. A good place to source your vegetable and herb seedlings, together with valuable advice on how to care for them is Allendale Nursery either direct from the nursery or at various markets around the region.

The Boys Are Back

Pardon my indulgence, but the Western Bulldogs are on a roll to the finals and they will be back in Ballarat for the last round of the 2019 home and away season at Mars Oval. Might be a bit hard to get tickets now, but you can try.
