Australia’s queen of vintage and stylist extraordinaire, Lynda Gardener is renowned for her unique style, found locally at The White House in Daylesford. Lynda recently backed up this rural retreat, she and partner Mark Smith buying another property just a short drive away. The Estate Trentham opened last month and has already been welcomed by locals and tourists alike, many of whom are wanting to stay in this house so beautifully treated to Lynda’s deft touch. Secrets was invited for a tour of The Estate Trentham, where we quizzed her on this gorgeous new project.
Tell us about The Estate Trentham. It’s boutique accommodation with bespoke and individual interior touches, decorated with my signature style. There are three bedrooms, including one that was originally a potato picker’s shed. The entire property is surrounded by amazing ornamental gardens, including a harvest garden, fruit trees and berries. It’s all lovingly cared for by a local gardener, who tends to the plantings weekly, to ensure a continual abundance of fresh, organic produce for guests to enjoy. This is one of the most important elements Mark and I wanted for this new venture together.
How have you utilised the property’s barn? It can be hired for very small intimate gatherings, events, photo shoots, workshops or weddings. When I first walked in and saw this beautiful space just sitting here, I was so excited. It’s one of my favourite parts of The Estate Trentham.
The house was built in the 1900s, what are your favourite aspects? I love almost every part of it, from the verandah that wraps around the north-facing garden, to the intimate nature of the house itself. All of the original features of the house have been maintained, which makes it so cute and cosy.
Why Trentham? It’s such a postcard picture perfect town. Living in the city, I just love the drive from Woodend through to Trentham. Mark and I had been watching the Trentham property market for over a year, just waiting for the right place, and this is definitely it! The locals have been so friendly and helpful from the minute we bought the house.
What are some of the places you’ve discovered in town? Annie Smithers’ du Fermier, Red Beard Bakery, Colliban Foodstore, The Cosmopolitan, Phillip & Lea and The Trentham Collective, which are all a five minute walk from The Estate. Everything you need is all packaged in this beautiful little community, it’s just perfect.
