A New Plough In Myrniong
If you’re looking for somewhere to go where you’ll find exceptional food and great service, you have to try The Plough in Myrniong. Where’s Myrniong I hear you ask. It’s a little off the beaten track and you have to execute a bit of a “dipsy doodle” off the Western Highway, whether you’re travelling from Melbourne, Ballarat or Daylesford, but it is well signposted and well worth the effort. Myrniong is a little village of only 200 people with some rather gorgeous bluestone and sandstone buildings and a very cute bluestone church that stands opposite The Plough. The original Plough was a typical country pub that stood on the same spot since the 1860s and was burnt down twice – I guess once wasn’t enough.
The new Plough is a far cry from the pub of bygone days. It is now an elegant, well planned and welcoming place with most of the interior being designed by Jodie Mills co-owner with husband, executive chef Mark. Mark is responsible for the excellent menu, which isn’t without its share of innovation. Mark is very conscious of the possibility of a menu becoming boring, so he and his team are constantly thinking of new and exciting dishes to add. So if you find a favourite, you may just have to talk to Mark about keeping it on the list for a little bit longer.
This is a family business and it shows – the staff are very friendly and warm, without losing sight of service delivery and Mark is always up for a chat. He believes that when people come to The Plough they are actually coming into the family home and are treated as welcome guests. Without a lot of song and dance, this place has become very popular and one would expect that they would be gearing up for a very hectic Christmas period - but you’d be wrong. Mark and Jodie have had the courage to forgo the high yield period to strike a
work/life balance and will be closing for a month from the 18th December to spend quality family time with their two young daughters. But don’t despair, they’ll be back in mid January and if you haven’t already been one of the many who have found this amazing restaurant, you should book now for 2012. Keep in mind that this is also a B&B with three (sometimes six) very comfortable accommodation units, ideal for a “stop over” after a long, leisurely dinner or for a wedding party – this place caters for weddings too. The secret of The Plough is very definitely out, so do yourself a favour and get yourself there.
