Lionel Lindsay Exhibition

LIONEL LINDSAY – a new exhibition at Creswick Museum

For lovers of art and Australia’s history, there is a new exhibition of works by Lionel Lindsay opening at the Creswick Museum in January that will run until May 2012.

Lionel Lindsay is one of Australia’s greatest artists.   A wonderful character and an erudite and witty conversationalist, he revitalised the artist’s print and made it a thing of value to Australian collectors. He is also noted for his brilliant watercolours and his writings on art.   On his death, the Creswick Advertiser of May 26, 1961, reflected on his life and that of his siblings:

There were other good Australian born artists among their contemporaries but the Lindsays seemed to have the perseverance and a flair for doing the unconventional at the right time, as well as the ability to draw, which is the basis of art.”

Lionel was born in Creswick in October 1874, the third child of the famous Lindsay family of artists.Lionel reached great heights in his profession, both in Australia and in England.

He travelled widely, with Spain being a special passion of his.   The Creswick Museum is very pleased to be staging a special exhibition of Lionel’s work, with artworks from its own collection, the Art Gallery of Ballarat, Wesley College, Melbourne and from private collectors. The exhibition will run from January 26 to May 13, 2012. www.creswickmuseum.org.au
